LookSmart Search Engine News
Ask Jeeves has been around for a long time
|
LookSmart has the distinction of being the first SE/directory I encountered with
the balls to charge for reviews. This was way back in 96 when all engines were
free. It came as no surprise to me when they hosed their customers by turning a
one-time payment affiliate program into a PPC program. You see it's really quite simple!
They have always been about the $ and the quality of their index is indicative of
the $ culture that pervades it!
Self proclaimed leader
in paid search Inclusion? "LookSmart is a leading provider of Internet search
solutions and the global leader in paid search inclusion". Now this has got to
be a joke, of course they also displayed LookListings ads for searches on
"search engine optimization" so exaggeration and poor targeting is one of their
strong suits!
Road Runner, InfoSpace, CNET, and Lycos are affiliates of LookSmart.
Wisenut, Zeal and Grub are owned by LookSmart with international sites for Australia, Canada, New
Zealand, United Kingdom and Japan. LookSmart is also incorporating Gator network results. Gator is
the product presently wreaking havoc on computers and a leading provider of
those wonderful pop-under and other forms of intrusive advertising.
Zeal is a directory of non-commercial sites and the non-commercial
areas of business sites. Zeal results are one way to enter several engines' results without paying.
Non-commercial can mean many things. IMO, if you have a logo for your business
it's likely going to be deemed commercial. The best place to get listing support
is through the helpful Zealots (volunteer editors) forums.
As of January 15, 2004 LookSmart is no longer used by MSN. After the
MSN departure, it is at best a mid-sized second tier PPC engine. Whether L$
will ever be a more than a shadow of what it was pre January 15th 2004 is the $64,000 question.
International office closings have been announced so sales support is scaling
down.
Above opinions are
Terry Van Horne's. Take it up with him! ;) |
