Overture Search Engine News
Ask Jeeves has been around for a long time

Overture Services is a publicly traded
company owned by Yahoo!. Overture has a search site of its own, however it
is primarily an ad distribution network. Prices of ads are based on a
bid/auction system and targeted or contextual ads are available, although they
don't seem to be controlled as easily as Google's AdSense program. The ad
network is made up of major search engines (Yahoo! and MSN) which comprise
approximately 60% of total revenues, along with Yahoo's other properties, AllTheWeb and
AltaVista. Overture Services is currently the
world's leading PPC provider just edging out Google in North America and second to ESpotting in Europe. Other affiliates include smaller destinations and ad
networks such as Gator. Gator is a product responsible for
damaging computers and pop-under ads. In our opinion this affiliation is a
liability! Overture services
acquired AltaVista and AlltheWeb shortly before it was in turn bought by Yahoo!. It is our opinion that Yahoo!
has purchased Overture not only for the technology and ad distribution
network but also for the large portfolio of intellectual property and
patent rights. The patents held by Yahoo! through these acquisitions will
make development of a new search engine considerably harder, especially if
it enforces these patents and IP rights.
