Yahoo! Search Engine News

Yahoo!

Ask Jeeves has been around for a long time
Yahoo! is a publicly traded company. It is the oldest surviving major search engine or directory. Yahoo! is still very much a destination and still resembles what was called a portal in the past. Recent and past acquisitions include Overture services (Second largest Ad distributor behind Google), Jobs.com, Inktomi, GeoCities and more. Portal features include news, mail, finance, Yahoo! Groups (email newsletters and discussion lists), a large stable of e-merchants in its Yahoo! stores and more.

It is our opinion that Yahoo! purchased Overture not only for the technology and ad distribution network but also for the large portfolio of intellectual property and patent rights. At the time of it's sale to Yahoo! Overture owned AltaVista and the AllTheWeb search portal. AltaVista holds several search engine technology patents and was a leading search portal. The patents held by Yahoo! through these acquisitions will make development of a new search engine considerably harder, especially if it enforces these patents and IP rights.

Inktomi, Yahoos! first search acquisition, was one of the first providers of Yahoo!'s results and is the innovator of Inclusion (paid Indexing) and XML Feeds to monetize search results. Inktomi is right behind Google as a supplier of primary and secondary results for portals. Inktomi provides the primary results on HotBot, MSN and secondary results on Overture and several other lesser known search portals. Where the Inktomi results fit in on Yahoo! is in flux with both the spider and PFI programs under review. Whether primary or secondary Inktomi is very prevalent in the Yahoo! SERPs.

Yahoo's search results were provided by Google until February of 2004, when Yahoo! released its own search engine, based mostly on Inktomi. The company also has a large directory which is monetized through an inclusion program. All commercial sites must pay to be included, and renew their listing on an annual basis. It had been our opinion for some time that a Yahoo! directory listing was not necessary, but since the release of their own search engine, early indications are pointing to a boost being given in organic results to sites that are in the directory. Overture provides the PPC results found at both the top and bottom of the results.
